Caleb Yirenkyi CAF Young Player of the Year

Ghanaian midfielder Caleb Yirenkyi has received continental recognition after being named among the 10 nominees for the 2026 Confederation of African Football (CAF) Young Player of the Year award.

The 20-year-old is the sole Ghanaian on the shortlist, following an impressive season that has seen him make significant contributions at both club and international levels.

Yirenkyi attracted attention through his performances for Danish club FC Nordsjælland before securing a transfer to English Premier League side Coventry City.

His progress has also been reflected in his performances for the Black Stars, where he featured prominently in Ghana’s campaign at the FIFA World Cup.

One of his notable contributions came in Ghana’s 1-0 win over Panama, when he scored the decisive goal to hand the Black Stars a crucial victory. The result helped Ghana advance to the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time in 16 years.

The Ghanaian youngster will now compete against nine other emerging talents from across Africa for the individual honour.

The nominees include Algeria’s Ibrahim Maza, Cameroon’s Christian Kofane, Ivory Coast duo Christ Inao and Yan Diomande, and Egypt’s Hamza Abdelkarim and Ismaël Kamissoko.

Morocco is represented by Abdellah Ouazane and Ayoub Bouaddi, while Senegal’s Ibrahim Mbaye completes the list.

The 2026 CAF Awards ceremony is scheduled for Monday, December 7, in Lagos, Nigeria. The event will bring together some of Africa’s finest footballers, coaches and teams to celebrate their performances and achievements over the year.
