Carlos Queiroz

Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz has refuted reports suggesting he has stepped down from his position, explaining that his recent emotional social media post was merely a message of thanks to Ghanaians and not a resignation announcement.

The Portuguese coach addressed the speculation during a surprise conversation with a football supporter from the United States, making it clear that he is still in charge of the Black Stars.

“I’ve not resigned. I was just sending my message of gratitude,” Queiroz stated.

Rumors about the 73-year-old’s future emerged after Ghana’s 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Following the loss, Queiroz shared an emotional message on his official Instagram page, thanking Ghanaian fans, his players, and football officials for their support throughout the tournament.

Many local and international media outlets interpreted the post as a farewell message, leading to widespread reports that the former Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Portugal coach had resigned from his role.

Queiroz has now dismissed those claims, stressing that he has not tendered any resignation to the Ghana Football Association (GFA).

The experienced tactician is still serving under the four-month contract he signed in April to guide Ghana through the 2026 FIFA World Cup. His future with the national team is expected to be determined after the GFA concludes its technical assessment of the Black Stars’ World Cup campaign.

For the time being, Queiroz remains Ghana’s head coach, with no official indication that he plans to step down despite the speculation following the team’s exit from the tournament.
