Morocco secured a place in the Round of 16 at the FIFA World Cup after edging past the Netherlands 3-2 in a tense penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw that remained unchanged after extra time.
The Atlas Lions owed much of their success to goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who produced a decisive save during the shootout before Ismael Saibari confidently converted the winning penalty to seal a last-16 meeting with tournament co-hosts Canada.
Morocco showed tremendous determination after falling behind late in the match. The Dutch appeared to have done enough to progress when Cody Gakpo finished off a flowing move involving substitutes Wout Weghorst and Crysencio Summerville.

Introduced in the 71st minute, Weghorst immediately made his presence felt by flicking on a long pass into Summerville’s path. The winger then unselfishly squared the ball for Gakpo, who made no mistake from close range to put the Netherlands ahead.
Just when the Dutch looked set to advance, Morocco found an equaliser deep into stoppage time. Issa Diop powered home a header from Chemsdine Talbi’s inviting cross, beating Bart Verbruggen and sending the match into extra time.
Both goalkeepers delivered outstanding performances throughout the contest.
Verbruggen made several vital saves to frustrate Morocco, including an excellent reaction stop to deny Neil El Aynaoui from close range before producing another brilliant save to tip Achraf Hakimi’s fierce strike over the bar.
Bounou was equally influential at the opposite end, making a number of crucial interventions, including a fine save to keep out a powerful effort from Micky van de Ven.

Morocco nearly broke the deadlock early in the second half when Hakimi struck the crossbar, while Van de Ven later produced a timely block to deny the Atlas Lions captain another opportunity.
Extra time offered limited scoring chances, although Morocco came close to snatching victory when Soufiane Rahimi raced through on goal, only for Verbruggen to make another exceptional save.
With neither team able to find the decisive goal, the match went to penalties.
The shootout was filled with drama as both sides squandered opportunities from the spot. Teun Koopmeiners successfully converted for the Netherlands, while Neil El Aynaoui and Justin Kluivert both saw their efforts strike the woodwork.
Quinten Timber and Achraf Hakimi also failed to convert, keeping the contest level until Bounou produced the moment that changed everything by denying Summerville with a superb save.
Saibari then stepped up with composure to convert the decisive penalty, sending Morocco into the knockout stage while condemning the Netherlands to another heartbreaking World Cup elimination via a penalty shootout.
The result extends Morocco’s impressive run at the tournament and keeps alive their dream of another historic World Cup campaign.
