Ghana

The Black Stars of Ghana will kick off their 2026 FIFA World Cup journey tonight when they face Panama in a Group L encounter at BMO Field in Toronto, Canada.

The match is scheduled to begin at 23:00 GMT and presents both sides with an opportunity to make a positive start to their tournament campaign.

Ghana enters the competition aiming to overcome a difficult period marked by inconsistent performances and disappointing results.

The Black Stars have failed to secure a victory in their last seven matches across all competitions, suffering defeats to the likes of Austria, Germany, and Mexico during that run.

The team’s recent struggles come after the disappointment of missing out on qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in two decades. Nevertheless, there remains hope that a strong showing at the World Cup can restore confidence and revive the fortunes of Ghanaian football.

Despite their recent form, Ghana qualified impressively for the tournament, finishing top of their CAF qualifying group with eight wins, one draw, and one defeat, ending the campaign six points ahead of second-placed Madagascar.

Following qualification, Otto Addo departed his role as head coach, with experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz appointed in March to lead the team.

Queiroz brings a wealth of World Cup experience and has been tasked with rebuilding consistency and competitiveness within the squad.

Panama, meanwhile, arrive in Canada with growing belief after an encouraging qualification campaign.

The Central Americans progressed through the second round of the CONCACAF qualifiers unbeaten and are determined to make a stronger impact than they did during their World Cup debut in 2018, where they exited at the group stage without recording a victory.

Although Panama endured mixed results in their preparatory matches, including a heavy defeat to Brazil, head coach Thomas Christiansen has built a disciplined and organised side capable of troubling more established opponents.

Team News

Ghana will be without influential midfielder Thomas Partey, who remains unavailable after visa-related issues prevented him from travelling to Canada.

Aside from Partey’s absence, Carlos Queiroz has a fully fit squad to choose from, with Jordan Ayew expected to spearhead the attack alongside Ernest Nuamah and Antoine Semenyo.

Black Stars

For Panama, midfielder Adalberto Carrasquilla remains a fitness concern after missing recent friendly matches through injury.

However, he has resumed training and could feature from the bench. Veteran midfielder Aníbal Godoy is expected to provide leadership and experience in the heart of the team.

Probable Line-ups

Ghana: Lawrence Ati-Zigi; Marvin Senaya, Jonas Adjetey, Jerome Opoku, Gideon Mensah; Elisha Owusu, Caleb Yirenkyi; Ernest Nuamah, Ibrahim Boakye, Antoine Semenyo; and Jordan Ayew.

Panama: Orlando Mosquera; César Ramos, José Córdoba, Andrés Andrade, Michael Murillo; Aníbal Godoy, Cristian Harvey; Édgar Bárcenas, Yoel Bárcenas Rodríguez, Ismael Díaz; José Fajardo.

Match Prediction

While Ghana may hold a slight advantage on paper due to their pedigree and individual quality, their recent form suggests they could face a stern challenge against a disciplined Panama side.

With both teams likely to approach the opening fixture cautiously, a closely contested encounter is anticipated.

Prediction: Ghana 1-1 Panama.
