Carlos Queiroz, head coach of the Ghana national football team, has indicated that locally based players still have a chance to earn places in the squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In recent years, players competing in Ghana’s domestic league have struggled to secure spots in the national team, which has largely been dominated by foreign-based professionals.
Currently, Benjamin Asare of Accra Hearts of Oak stands as the only consistent home-based inclusion.
Speaking at his official unveiling, Queiroz emphasised that selection would be based strictly on merit, assuring that deserving players would be given equal opportunities.
He stressed that no player has an automatic claim to a place in the team, noting that representing the nation is a privilege that must be earned.
According to him, his responsibility is to ensure that only players who are capable, in good physical condition, and experienced enough will be chosen.
The Portuguese tactician is expected to submit his final squad by June 1 ahead of the expanded 48-team tournament.
Ghana has been drawn in Group L alongside England national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team.
The Black Stars will be aiming to progress beyond the group stage for the first time since their memorable run at the 2010 World Cup.
