Thomas Partey

Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey is reportedly close to completing a move to Saudi Pro League club Al Shabab after arriving in Riyadh ahead of his transfer.

The 33-year-old is expected to undergo a medical examination as the final step before signing a one-year contract with the Saudi Arabian side.

Partey is set to join Al Shabab as a free agent following the end of his contract with Spanish club Villarreal, where he played during the 2025/26 season.

The proposed move would add another chapter to the experienced midfielder’s career, having previously featured for top European clubs including Atletico Madrid and Arsenal.

Partey spent several seasons at Arsenal, making 130 appearances and scoring nine goals before leaving the North London club in 2025.

He subsequently moved to Villarreal on a free transfer and made 25 appearances across all competitions during his only campaign in Spain.

The midfielder remains an important figure for the Ghana national team and represented the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America.

He featured in three matches during the tournament as Ghana advanced to the Round of 32 before being eliminated.

A move to Al Shabab would provide Partey with an opportunity to continue playing competitive football while preparing for Ghana’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign, which is scheduled to begin in September.

The Black Stars failed to qualify for the previous AFCON tournament and will be determined to secure a place at the next edition.

Partey’s experience at club and international level could prove valuable to Ghana as the team begins its latest qualification campaign.
