President John Dramani Mahama has urged Ghanaians to throw their full support behind Black Stars head coach Otto Addo and his technical team after Ghana’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Despite facing heavy criticism earlier in the campaign, Addo silenced his critics by guiding the national team to an impressive run seven wins, one draw, 22 goals scored, and only five conceded. His remarkable 87.5% win rate sealed Ghana’s fifth World Cup appearance and their second consecutive qualification.
In an interview with Sporty FM, President Mahama called for unity and patience, emphasizing that collective national support is crucial for the Black Stars’ sustained progress. “Let us give the management and technical team some peace. I know that we are 33 million coaches in Ghana, but please let’s keep our coaching to ourselves,” he appealed.
He also warned about the damaging impact of harsh online comments on players’ mental health and encouraged Ghanaians to remain supportive and positive.
“Let the coaches and managers handle the team without distractions. In these days of social media, people can say hurtful things that affect the mental health of players. So please, let’s refrain from such comments and support the Black Stars fully,” he added.
Following their failure to qualify for AFCON 2025, the Black Stars have shifted their focus to the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Otto Addo, now the first Ghanaian coach to lead the team to two World Cups, aims to build a strong and competitive squad capable of surpassing Ghana’s historic 2010 quarter-final feat in South Africa.
