Asante Kotoko Sporting Club have confirmed the appointment of experienced South African coach Eric Tinkler as the club’s new head coach with immediate effect.
The Ghana Premier League giants announced the decision on Friday, describing Tinkler as a highly accomplished manager whose extensive coaching experience and successful playing career will strengthen the club’s pursuit of domestic and continental success.
The Portuguese-South African tactician arrives in Kumasi with more than 30 years of experience in professional football and is a holder of the CAF A Licence.

Decorated Coaching Career
Tinkler has managed several of South Africa’s top clubs, including Cape Town City FC, SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, Orlando Pirates, and Bidvest Wits.
Among his notable achievements, he guided Orlando Pirates to the final of the CAF Champions League and led SuperSport United to the CAF Confederation Cup final. His coaching résumé also includes domestic honours such as the MTN8 and Telkom Knockout titles.
Distinguished Playing Career
Before moving into management, Tinkler enjoyed an impressive playing career for both club and country.
The former midfielder earned 48 appearances for South Africa’s national team, Bafana Bafana, and captained the side during the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations. He also represented South Africa at the 1998 FIFA World Cup and was part of the squad that won the 1996 Africa Cup of Nations.
At club level, he featured in Europe, playing professionally for Barnsley FC in England, Cagliari in Italy, and Vitória de Setúbal in Portugal.
Kotoko Confident in Tinkler’s Appointment
According to Asante Kotoko, Tinkler’s reputation for tactical organisation, disciplined coaching methods, and commitment to player development aligns perfectly with the club’s long-term ambitions.

He is expected to work closely with Director of Football Stanley Menzo Purl as the Porcupine Warriors continue building a sustainable football structure capable of challenging for trophies in Ghana and on the African stage.
Interim Management Committee Chairman James Osei Brown expressed confidence that the South African possesses the qualities needed to lead the club into a new chapter.
He noted that Tinkler’s experience, discipline, and record of developing players while achieving results at the highest level of African football made him the ideal choice to guide Asante Kotoko. Brown also welcomed the new coach to the club, expressing optimism about the future under his leadership.
