Senegal showcased the Africa Cup of Nations trophy ahead of Saturday’s international friendly against Peru at Stade de France, even though they were stripped of the title earlier this month.
Morocco were officially named champions of the 2025 AFCON after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) reversed the outcome of January’s final.
The controversy began when Senegal walked off the pitch in protest after Morocco were awarded a stoppage-time penalty with the score tied at 0-0.
After a delay of about 17 minutes, play resumed. Morocco missed the penalty, and Senegal went on to score the winning goal in extra time.
However, following an appeal by the Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), CAF ruled that Senegal had forfeited the match, awarding Morocco a 3-0 victory.
Senegal has since taken the matter to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which has indicated that a decision will be made as quickly as possible.
Before facing Peru, captain Kalidou Koulibaly led the team in parading the AFCON trophy around the stadium, before he and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy placed it in the presidential box.
The team also wore jerseys featuring two stars above the crest, symbolizing both their disputed 2025 triumph and their 2021 AFCON victory.
Senegal went on to defeat Peru 2-0, with goals from Nicolas Jackson currently on loan at Bayern Munich from Chelsea—and Ismaila Sarr of Crystal Palace.
The match in Paris marked Senegal’s first appearance since the AFCON final and served as part of their preparations for the upcoming World Cup in June, where they have been grouped with France, Norway, and either Bolivia or Iraq.
