Black Stars

Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams has invited the leadership of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to a crisis meeting following the Black Stars’ difficult start to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

The meeting, scheduled for Friday, October 2, 2026, comes as Ghana faces growing concerns over the national team’s performances and the broader direction of football administration in the country.

The Black Stars currently sit at the bottom of Group C without a point after losing their opening two matches of the qualifying campaign.

Ghana opened the campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Côte d’Ivoire in Bouaké before suffering an even heavier setback against The Gambia at the Accra Sports Stadium.

Despite taking a two-goal lead, the Black Stars were unable to hold on and eventually suffered a 4-2 home defeat, leaving their qualification hopes under significant pressure.

Meeting Comes After Queiroz Exit

The latest setback was followed by the departure of head coach Carlos Queiroz, whose contract with the GFA was mutually terminated on October 1, 2026.

Queiroz had been brought in earlier in the year to guide Ghana through the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the subsequent 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign. Ghana’s opening two AFCON defeats ultimately preceded the decision to end the relationship.

The meeting between Minister Adams and the GFA leadership is expected to examine the challenges confronting the Black Stars as well as wider issues affecting Ghanaian football.

The engagement comes amid increased public and stakeholder scrutiny of the GFA following the team’s poor results.

Pressure Mounts on Ghana Football

Adams, who is also the Member of Parliament for Buem, is expected to use the meeting to engage the football authorities on the current situation and possible measures for addressing the challenges facing the national team.

The meeting follows calls from some stakeholders for changes within Ghana’s football administration. However, Adams has also stated that the government does not have the authority to simply dissolve the GFA, which is a legally registered football association.

The immediate focus, however, remains on Ghana’s efforts to recover from its poor start and remain in contention for qualification to the 2027 tournament.

Black Stars Face Crucial Somalia Fixtures

Ghana will return to AFCON qualifying action in October with a double-header against Somalia, with both matches scheduled to take place at the Accra Sports Stadium.

The Black Stars will need to collect points from those fixtures to revive their campaign and improve their position in Group C.

Ghana are seeking to return to the Africa Cup of Nations after missing the 2025 edition in Morocco, which ended their run of more than two decades of consecutive appearances at the continental tournament.

The 2027 Africa Cup of Nations will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, with Ghana now facing an early challenge to keep its qualification hopes alive.
