Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club defeated Asante Kotoko 1-0 in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary round tie at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, October 19, 2025.
The decisive goal came early in the second half, just two minutes after the restart, when Joseph Bakasu capitalized on a defensive lapse to score in the 47th minute, giving Wydad a crucial away lead.
The match began with both teams showing attacking intent, but neither side could break the deadlock in the first half. After the restart, Wydad took charge with Bakasu’s strike, which energized the visitors and forced Kotoko to chase the game in front of their home fans.
Things worsened for the Porcupine Warriors shortly after, as their goalkeeper Mohammed Camara was sent off in the 49th minute for handling the ball outside the box, leaving Kotoko with ten men. Despite being a man down, Kotoko showed resilience and created a few chances but could not break down Wydad’s disciplined defense.
Wydad managed the game well, maintaining possession and controlling the tempo to hold on to the narrow victory. The return leg is scheduled for October 24, 2025, in Casablanca, where Kotoko will need to overturn the deficit to advance in the competition.
This result leaves Asante Kotoko with a challenging task ahead but also sets up an intense showdown in Morocco, as they aim to keep their Confederation Cup hopes alive against a well-organized and efficient Wydad side
