The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has raised concerns about reports that some students are misusing government-issued tablets for non-academic purposes, including accessing pornographic material.
Addressing Parliament on Thursday, November 27, he revealed that approximately 980,000 of the 1.3 million tablets distributed to senior high schools across the country have not yet been fully customized to limit their use to educational content.
“I inherited a contract valued at about 337 million US dollars for the distribution of 1.3 million tablets to all Free Senior High Schools to enhance digital learning. I am informed that around 980,000 of these have been deployed,” he stated.
He further noted, “Mr. Speaker, it has come to my attention that many of these tablets are not customized, allowing students to use them for unrelated activities, including viewing pornography, which is unacceptable.”
Haruna Iddrisu stressed that the government is treating the issue with urgency.
“Mr. Speaker, the government is taking this matter seriously. There must be clear restrictions on how the tablets are used, and they should serve strictly academic purposes,” he added.
