The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has unanimously endorsed Carlos Queiroz to remain as head coach of the Black Stars following his performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum disclosed that the association’s Executive Council had assessed the 73-year-old Portuguese coach and agreed that he should continue in the position beyond his initial short-term contract.
Queiroz was appointed on a four-month deal to replace Otto Addo and assumed responsibility for the Black Stars shortly before the World Cup. However, uncertainty has surrounded his future, with reports of unpaid financial obligations and ongoing discussions over a possible extension.
GFA Executive Council Endorses Queiroz
Speaking to Graphic Sports, Asante Twum confirmed that the Executive Council, which is the GFA’s highest decision-making body, had unanimously agreed to recommend a longer-term deal for Queiroz.
He said the council reached the decision after reviewing the coach’s performance and concluded that he should remain in charge of the national team.
The recommendation is a major vote of confidence in Queiroz, who had only a brief period to work with the Black Stars before the World Cup.
However, Asante Twum clarified that the GFA’s recommendation does not by itself guarantee that Queiroz will continue as Ghana coach.
Sports Ministry to Have Final Say
Queiroz’s future will depend on negotiations involving the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and the coach himself.
According to Asante Twum, the ministry must approve the proposed agreement because it is expected to be responsible for paying the coach’s salary.
He also said he could not confirm reports that the government has outstanding payments owed to Queiroz, noting that he was not directly responsible for the coach’s financial arrangements.
Asante Twum further indicated that he was not aware of the specific terms of the GFA’s proposed contract or any counteroffer submitted by Queiroz.
Queiroz’s Long-Term Future Yet to Be Confirmed
The next phase is expected to involve negotiations between the GFA, the Sports Ministry, and Queiroz over the terms of a potential new contract.
Issues surrounding the coach’s finances and contractual arrangements must be settled before his long-term future with the Black Stars can be officially confirmed.
Desmond Ofei Also Linked to Black Stars Job
Despite the GFA’s preference for Queiroz, reports have linked former Ghana Under-20 coach Desmond Ofei with the Black Stars job for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which are expected to begin in September.
For now, however, the GFA’s position is that it wants Queiroz to continue as head coach.
His continuation will ultimately depend on whether the GFA, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, and the Portuguese coach reach an agreement on a new contract.
