teachers

The National Teaching Council (NTC) has clarified that all licensed teachers in Ghana are required to renew their professional teaching licences, irrespective of their employment status or whether they are currently practising.

According to the Council, the renewal requirement applies to both teachers employed by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and qualified teachers who are yet to secure employment. It explained that maintaining a valid professional licence is part of the obligations teachers must fulfil to remain in good standing and qualify for future employment opportunities.

The clarification follows concerns from trained but unemployed teachers regarding their pre-enrolment on Teacher Portal Ghana (TPG) and the requirement to pay GH¢200 to complete the registration process for their permanent teaching licences.

The NTC explained that the pre-enrolment exercise was introduced to simplify the licensing process and ensure that all qualified teachers, including those awaiting GES recruitment, are captured in the system for the issuance of permanent licences.

The Council further indicated that obtaining a provisional licence does not automatically complete the registration process. Teachers are expected to fulfil the remaining requirements, including registering and paying the stipulated GH¢200 fee where applicable, to obtain their permanent licences and maintain their professional status.

NTC Explains Licence Requirements for Unemployed Teachers

The Council emphasised that teaching, like other regulated professions, operates under a professional licensing framework that requires practitioners to keep their licences valid, regardless of whether they are currently employed.

Consequently, teachers who have not received postings from the GES are still expected to comply with the relevant licensing requirements. The same applies to licensed teachers who are temporarily out of practice or working outside the public education system.

The NTC maintained that keeping professional licences valid and up to date is important for teachers who intend to pursue employment opportunities in the future, particularly recruitment into the Ghana Education Service.

For trained teachers awaiting recruitment, the clarification serves as a reminder to complete the necessary registration and renewal procedures rather than assume that unemployment exempts them from these obligations.

The development is particularly significant for qualified teachers hoping to secure GES appointments, as ensuring that their licensing records are in order could help them prepare for future recruitment exercises.

Teachers have been encouraged to check their registration details on Teacher Portal Ghana and follow the NTC’s official guidance on permanent licence registration, renewal and the applicable GH¢200 payment.

Steps to Renew or Update an NTC Teaching Licence

Teachers can check their licensing status and access the relevant services through the official Teacher Portal Ghana website: https://tpg.ntc.gov.gh/.

The following steps can help teachers navigate the process:

  1. Visit the official portal: Open the Teacher Portal Ghana website using a smartphone or computer.
  2. Log in to your account: Enter your existing login details. New users should follow the portal’s instructions to create an account.
  3. Choose the appropriate service: Select the teacher category or licensing service that applies to your circumstances.
  4. Verify your details: Ensure that your name, contact information, academic qualifications and other professional records are accurate. Follow the official procedure to correct any errors.
  5. Check your licence status: Review the licensing or renewal options available on your account and identify the requirements applicable to your current status.
  6. Upload the required documents: Provide any supporting documents requested by the portal, depending on your registration category.
  7. Confirm the applicable fee: Follow the official payment instructions and verify the amount before making any payment. Teachers completing permanent licence registration should confirm whether the GH¢200 charge applies to their specific application.
  8. Submit your application: Review all the information provided and submit the application for processing.
  9. Monitor your application: Regularly check your portal account, email and SMS notifications for updates, requests for additional information or confirmation of successful processing.

Teachers are advised to rely on official NTC announcements and instructions on the portal to confirm the requirements applicable to their individual licensing status.
