The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, is set to announce his final ruling on the long-running Bawku chieftaincy conflict today, Monday, December 1, at the Manhyia Palace.
Earlier this year, President John Dramani Mahama tasked the Asantehene with spearheading renewed efforts to bring an end to the decades-old dispute.
Otumfuo began his latest mediation mission in April, holding meetings with representatives of the rival groups between April 28 and 30 to restart dialogue and create a framework for meaningful engagement.
Although the consultations were briefly put on hold, they resumed on May 13. At that point, the Asantehene observed that the discussions had helped maintain a period of relative peace in the area.
For years, Bawku has suffered from recurring violence, isolated attacks, and heightened tensions that have led to loss of life, restricted movement, and repeated curfews.
These ongoing clashes have hindered economic activities, strained community relations, and raised national alarm over the pressing need for a permanent resolution.
According to the Manhyia Palace, today’s sitting represents the climax of extensive negotiations and peacebuilding initiatives undertaken over several months. Many residents and citizens across the country are optimistic that the Asantehene’s final decision will open the door to harmony, stability, and progress in the troubled region.
