Ghanaian players

Club football returned with excitement and drama over the weekend, with three of the world’s top five leagues taking centre stage. Ghanaian players began the ground running and continued where they left off last season.

The biggest story of the weekend, albeit regrettable, was Ghana’s Antoine Semenyo, whose spectacular performance against reigning English Premier League (EPL) winners Liverpool was nearly overshadowed by racial comments hurled at him.

Other Ghanaian players also made a big impression on the pitch.

These six footballers were named the top Ghanaian players on the weekend of August 15-17, 2025, based on their impact and output for their respective teams.

Brandon Thomas-Asante

Brandon Thomas-Asante of the Ghana Black Stars played an important role in Coventry City’s 5-3 victory over Derby County away. He tied the score with his only effort on goal in the 72nd minute, making it 3-3, before his team scored two more goals in seven minutes to seal victory.

Prince Amoako Jr.

Despite FC Nordsjaelland’s 3-1 loss to FC Copenhagen on Friday, Ghanaian youth Prince Amoako Junior was voted Man-of-the-Match in the Danish Superliga encounter.

Amoako scored the opening goal in the 46th minute, but his team crumbled under duress after being reduced to 10 men. Even though his team lost, his remarkable performance stood out.

Ransford Yeboah—Konigsdorffer

The 23-year-old Ghanaian attacker scored the winning goal for Hamburger SV in the first round of the DFB Pokal against FK Primasens. The game concluded 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Ransford Yeboah-Konigsdorffer scoring the winning goal in the 100th minute.

He was a top target for French Ligue 1 club OGC Nice during the transfer window, but the deal fell through, and he will now make his Bundesliga debut against Borussia Monchengladbach on Sunday, August 24, 2025.

Muhammad Kudus

Mohammed Kudus had a fantastic EPL start for Tottenham, helping his team defeat newly promoted Burnley 3-0. Kudus became the first Spurs player to assist on his league debut since 2017, and he generated five chances, more than any other player in the Premier League this weekend.

In addition, he was the only player to record multiple assists in game week one.

Benjamin Tetteh

Benjamin Tetteh scored twice in NK Maribor’s 3-3 draw with NK Bravo in the Slovenian Prva Liga.

The 26-year-old striker joined Maribor this summer and has already demonstrated why the Slovenian club reportedly spent €800,000 for his services. Tetteh scored in the 52nd and 79th minutes to make it 3-1, but the hosts were unable to maintain their lead, as the visitors equalised with two late goals.

He’s already scored three goals in five league games this season.

Antoine Semenyo

Antoine Semenyo, unquestionably Ghana’s greatest performer over the weekend, made headlines not only for the racist abuse he suffered, but also for scoring a superb brace against Liverpool in the 2025/26 EPL opener.

Bournemouth were behind by two goals when he scored in the 64th minute. From there, Andoni Iraola’s team gained confidence in the game.

Twelve minutes later, they punished the hosts with a counterattack from a Liverpool corner. The ball fell to Semenyo in his half; he picked it up quickly and raced out to score a superb solo goal, tying the game for the visitors.

With 22 goals, he now ranks fourth in Bournemouth’s all-time EPL top scorers list.

However, Bournemouth were unable to hold on and salvage a point. Substitute Federico Chiesa restored Liverpool’s lead in the 88th minute, and Mohammed Salah completed the scoring in stoppage time.
