Carlos Queiroz

The Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, has clarified the monthly salary of Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz, ending speculation over the financial details of the Portuguese coach’s contract.

According to the minister, Queiroz receives $80,000 per month, contrary to reports suggesting that the experienced coach earns $100,000 monthly.

Since Queiroz was appointed Ghana’s head coach ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, discussions about his contract terms have generated significant public interest. However, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) did not publicly disclose details of the short-term agreement signed with the former Real Madrid assistant coach, fueling various reports and assumptions about his earnings.

Speaking during an interview on 3FM Sunrise, Sports Minister Kofi Adams addressed the issue and provided clarity on the coach’s remuneration.

“Carlos Queiroz earns $80,000 a month, not the $100,000 that had been speculated,” Adams revealed.

The statement brings an end to months of uncertainty surrounding the salary of the 73-year-old tactician, who was appointed after Otto Addo’s departure in March.

Queiroz was handed the responsibility of guiding Ghana through the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite having limited time to prepare the squad for the global tournament.

Although Ghana lost their final Group C match 2-1 to Croatia, the results were enough for the team to finish third in the group and advance to the knockout stage.

Ghana’s World Cup journey eventually ended in the Round of 32 after a closely fought 1-0 defeat to Colombia.

Despite the elimination, the team’s performances received positive reviews from fans and analysts, especially considering the difficult circumstances surrounding the preparation period and the quality of opposition faced.

Praise for Tactical Improvements

Queiroz earned recognition for improving Ghana’s defensive structure and introducing greater tactical discipline into the team.

Many observers highlighted the organization and resilience displayed by the Black Stars throughout the tournament, which helped Ghana return to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time since the 2010 edition in South Africa.

Reports indicate that both the Ghana Football Association and the Ministry of Sports and Recreation are satisfied with the progress made under the Portuguese coach.

Possible Contract Extension

With his initial short-term agreement nearing its end, discussions are reportedly ongoing between Queiroz, the GFA, and government officials over a possible two-year contract extension.

A new deal would allow the experienced coach to continue overseeing Ghana’s rebuilding process and prepare the team for upcoming international competitions.

The next major challenge for Queiroz and the Black Stars will be the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, where Ghana has been placed in Group C alongside Côte d’Ivoire, Somalia, and The Gambia.

With qualification matches scheduled to begin in September, Queiroz will be hoping to build on the progress made at the World Cup and help Ghana return to the top level of African football.
