Harry Maguire, defender for Manchester United, has received a 15-month suspended prison sentence from a Greek court over an incident that occurred on the island of Mykonos in August 2020.
The England international had originally been sentenced in 2020 to 21 months and 10 days in jail after being found guilty of charges including repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public officials, and insulting authorities.
However, Maguire’s legal team filed an appeal the following day. Under Greek legal procedures, that appeal automatically cancelled the original conviction and triggered a full retrial.
The retrial experienced several delays, being postponed four times between 2023 and 2025 before finally resuming on Wednesday in Syros.
After reconsidering the case, the court ruled that Maguire was guilty of lesser offences—specifically minor assault, resisting arrest, and attempted bribery. Due to the reduced severity of the charges, his sentence was lowered to 15 months and suspended.
Sources cited by BBC Sport say Maguire maintains his innocence and intends to challenge the ruling at the Supreme Court level. He has reportedly declined several opportunities to settle the matter outside court because he wants to clear his name through the legal process.
