MrBeast builds community in Ghana

American YouTuber and philanthropist MrBeast, whose real name is Jimmy Donaldson, has completed a major community development project in Ghana, attracting widespread reactions from Ghanaians and social media users.

The project, reportedly costing nearly $10 million, has resulted in the development of Abena Dakwa Village, a new community designed to support families affected by child labour in Ghana’s cocoa-growing areas. The initiative forms part of MrBeast’s wider philanthropic efforts to improve access to education, clean water, housing, and other basic services.

What MrBeast built in Ghana

The newly developed community includes homes, a school, water infrastructure, and other facilities intended to provide residents with better living and learning conditions.

According to information from Beast Philanthropy, its work in Ghana has focused on communities affected by child labour, with interventions including schools, boreholes, kitchens, sanitation facilities, and handwashing infrastructure. The organization says the projects are designed around local leadership and sustainable income so that communities can continue the work after the organization reduces its direct involvement.

The project is connected to MrBeast’s broader 1 Billion Acts of Kindness initiative, which brought together creators from around the world to support communities and promote charitable action.

The official 1 Billion Followers Summit project information says 10 creators were selected to travel to Ghana and participate in the village-building project. The initiative was developed in partnership with the Varkey Foundation and Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives.

Why MrBeast chose Ghana

The project has a particular focus on children affected by labour in cocoa-producing communities.

MrBeast and his philanthropic partners have highlighted the connection between poverty, access to education and child labour. The stated aim is to help create conditions where children can attend school instead of being pushed into work because of their families’ economic circumstances.

The initiative also forms part of a broader effort to provide communities with infrastructure that can remain useful beyond the initial construction phase.

Ghanaians react to MrBeast’s project

The completion of the project has generated considerable discussion among Ghanaians online.

Some social media users have praised MrBeast for investing in community infrastructure and providing facilities that can directly benefit children and families.

On Reddit, some Ghanaian users reacting to the project highlighted the speed and scale of the development, particularly the use of solar power and water systems. Others compared the reported cost of the project with public expenditure on infrastructure in Ghana. These comments reflect individual online reactions rather than an official assessment of the project.

Earlier reactions to MrBeast’s Ghana initiatives have also included praise for his efforts to improve schools and access to clean water.

However, his projects have not received universal approval. Some Ghanaians previously criticised the way poverty and disadvantaged communities were portrayed in his content, expressing concern that international audiences could form an overly negative impression of Ghana from such presentations.

MrBeast’s growing philanthropic work in Ghana

The new village is part of a series of philanthropic activities associated with MrBeast and his charitable organization in Ghana.

In addition to community development, Beast Philanthropy has worked on education, water, and child-labour interventions. The organization’s current information says its first five Ghanaian communities began receiving support in September 2025, with projects including schools, boreholes, kitchens, sanitation facilities, and other community infrastructure.

MrBeast’s philanthropic activities in Ghana have also expanded into school feeding. In September 2026, the Rockefeller Foundation announced a partnership with Beast Philanthropy to establish community-led school meal programs in Ghana’s Eastern Region and Kenya’s Bomet County. The initiative is intended to improve nutrition, school attendance, and learning while helping reduce pressures that can contribute to child labour.

A project attracting global attention

MrBeast’s Ghana community project has placed the country’s development challenges and the issue of child labour in cocoa-producing areas before a global online audience.

For supporters, the project demonstrates how private philanthropy and the influence of digital creators can be used to finance infrastructure and social programs.

At the same time, the project has renewed conversations among Ghanaians about the responsibilities of government, local communities, international organizations, and private philanthropists in addressing poverty, education, and child labour.

As the new community moves into operation, its long-term impact will depend not only on the infrastructure that has been constructed but also on local management, maintenance, education, and sustainable economic opportunities for residents.
