The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the Ghana Education Service (GES) will reopen its teacher recruitment portal in November 2026 to employ an additional 8,000 teachers, with the opportunity targeted specifically at graduates from the 2023 cohort of teacher trainees.

The Minister made the disclosure during the 68th Anniversary Speech and Prize-Giving Day celebration of Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary (POJOSS) held in Koforidua in the Eastern Region.

He explained that the decision forms part of efforts to address gaps in the teacher recruitment process and provide a fair opportunity for qualified graduates who have been awaiting employment.

Mr. Iddrisu noted that the first phase of the ongoing recruitment exercise, which selected 7,000 teachers through a merit-based, transparent, and open process, will be completed with successful candidates receiving their appointment letters and reporting to work by August 30, 2026.

He further revealed that the GES recruitment portal will be reopened from November 15, 2026, to facilitate the recruitment of the additional 8,000 teachers.

However, the Education Minister stressed that the new recruitment window will be exclusively available to graduates from the 2023 batch of Colleges of Education, describing the move as a measure to correct an imbalance in the system.

“I intend to use that to correct an anomaly. The 8,000 category will be for the 2023 graduating students teachers only,” he stated.

Mr. Iddrisu added that after the recruitment of the 2023 graduates, the government will consider another recruitment exercise for the 2024 cohort of teacher trainees as part of broader efforts to reduce the number of unemployed trained teachers in the country.
