Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the Ghana Education Service (GES) will reopen its recruitment portal on November 15, 2026, to recruit an additional 8,000 teachers from the 2023 graduating batch of the Colleges of Education.
The announcement was made during the 68th Anniversary Speech and Prize-Giving Day celebration of Pope John Senior High School and Minor Seminary (POJOSS) in Koforidua, in the Eastern Region.
According to the Minister, the ongoing recruitment exercise, which shortlisted 7,000 teachers through what he described as a transparent, merit-based process, is expected to be completed by the end of August.
He stated that all successful applicants from the current exercise would receive their appointment letters and assume duty on or before August 30, 2026.
Hon. Iddrisu further revealed that the next phase of recruitment will begin on November 15, when the GES portal reopens to engage another 8,000 trained teachers.
He explained that the recruitment will be reserved exclusively for graduates from the 2023 Colleges of Education cohort, in response to concerns raised by unemployed teacher trainees.
The Minister added that once the 2023 graduates have been recruited, the government will proceed with another recruitment exercise for the 2024 graduating batch as part of its plan to gradually clear the backlog of unemployed trained teachers.
The announcement follows recent remarks by the Education Minister that the government had requested financial clearance to recruit 50,000 teachers, but approval was granted for only 7,000 positions due to budgetary constraints.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to employing more trained teachers in phases as additional financial resources become available.
