Conservative activist Charlie Kirk, 31, was fatally shot on Wednesday during an event at Utah Valley University in Orem, Utah.
The shooting was a targeted attack, with the suspect firing a single bullet from an elevated position approximately 200 yards away from where Kirk was speaking.
The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Tyler Robinson of Utah, was captured after a coordinated manhunt involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, Orem Police, and Utah Department of Public Safety.
President Donald Trump confirmed on Friday that Robinson was in custody, crediting a family member of the suspect who reportedly turned him in to the authorities.
Trump praised the collaboration between local police, federal agents, and the state governor that led to the arrest. Robinson was seen fleeing the scene by crossing rooftops and eventually escaping into a nearby neighborhood before being apprehended.
Authorities recovered a high-powered, bolt-action rifle believed to be the weapon used in the shooting from a wooded area near the campus. Investigators also collected forensic evidence including palm prints, forearm imprints, and shoe impressions as part of the ongoing investigation.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox called the shooting a “political assassination” and vowed to hold the perpetrator fully accountable. The community remains shaken as efforts continue to understand the motive behind the attack on the outspoken conservative leader.
