Daddy Lumba’s One-Week

This Saturday, August 30, 2025, the country is getting ready for a huge crowd at the Black stars square in Accra for the one-week observation of highlife icon Daddy Lumba.

The music legend, who was born Charles Kwadwo Fosu, died on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra following a brief illness.

Later that day, his family formally confirmed his passing, causing sorrow in Ghana and abroad.

Tributes flowed in from all walks of life in the weeks that followed. The late musician was honoured by former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, current President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former President John Agyekum Kufuor, and prominent members of the NDC and NPP.

In addition to younger artists, actors, actresses, and business executives, Ghanaian music legends like Kojo Antwi, Amakye Dede, and the Tagoe Sisters joined in celebrating his legacy.

In order to formally notify the government of Daddy Lumba’s departure, his family paid a visit to Hon. Julius Debrah, the Chief of Staff, at the Jubilee House on Monday, August 25, prior to the one-week ceremony.

Mr. Debrah revealed, speaking on behalf of the president, that the late musician and former President John Dramani Mahama had a unique bond.

“Daddy Lumba’s songs were adored by the President.” Mr. Debrah stated, “This is a great loss to us all. You’d be amazed when he sits in his car and sings along.” “You can see there was a special connection because I can’t sing like that.”

He added that many Ghanaians found great emotional resonance in Daddy Lumba’s songs, which supported them throughout both happy and sad times. He went on to say, “His artistry crossed generations and left an enduring impression on Ghana’s cultural legacy.”

A huge crowd is expected to gather over the next week, mirroring the tremendous solidarity shown at the nationwide candlelight vigil that was held at Independence Square one week after his death.

Thousands of people both domestically and internationally attended the vigil, and concurrent memorial services were organised in the US, the UK, Germany, and the Netherlands.

Therefore, it is anticipated that Saturday’s memorial will be yet another significant occasion for introspection and celebration of the artist whose songs, such as “Theresa,” “Aben Wo Ha,” and “Ohia Asem,” become eternal anthems.

To celebrate a real giant of Ghanaian music, supporters, coworkers, lawmakers, and fans are anticipated to assemble at the Black Stars Square.
