Ghanaian hiplife icon Okyeame Kwame caused a stir at the 27th Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) after making a powerful anti-galamsey statement through a symbolic outfit designed to spotlight the destructive effects of illegal mining on Ghana’s environment and public health.
The award-winning musician, born Kwame Nsiah-Apau, arrived at the event in a dramatic gold-themed costume that immediately captured attention on the red carpet and sparked intense discussions across social media platforms.
Okyeame Kwame appeared in a flowing golden cloak paired with matching footwear while carrying a gold staff, creating a bold visual representation linked to Ghana’s gold mining crisis. His face was partially covered with a gold-beaded mask, adding to the symbolic and theatrical nature of the appearance.
Enhancing the message behind the outfit were two men accompanying him, both shirtless with mud smeared across their bodies and dressed in torn jeans trousers.
One carried a black mining pan commonly associated with galamsey operations, while the other wore a medical drip attached to his arm to symbolise the serious health consequences caused by environmental pollution and exposure to harmful chemicals used in illegal mining activities.
The rapper’s appearance quickly went viral online, with many Ghanaians applauding him for using one of the country’s biggest entertainment platforms to raise awareness about the growing galamsey crisis.
His outfit reignited national conversations about the devastating impact of illegal mining on Ghana’s rivers, forests, and communities. Water bodies such as the Pra, Offin, Densu, and Oda rivers have suffered severe pollution due to the use of toxic substances like mercury and cyanide in mining operations.
Environmental experts have repeatedly warned that continued destruction caused by galamsey could threaten agriculture, fishing, and access to clean drinking water if urgent action is not taken.
