The Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) of TUC-Ghana has proposed a 50 percent increase in base pay ahead of its upcoming salary negotiations with the Ministry of Employment and Labour Relations.
In an interview with Joy News on Thursday, October 9, the National Chairperson of the union, Salamatu Mahamah Braimah, stated that members expect a major boost in their working conditions due to the rising cost of living. She emphasized that fair compensation must reflect current economic realities.
“We are offering our labour, and whenever circumstances change, our conditions of service must also change. We are approaching the negotiations with the expectation of an improvement in base pay. The least we are asking for is 50%. If the government decides to grant 100%, we will gladly appreciate it and thank the President,” she remarked.
Responding to the union’s demand, the Minister of Employment and Labour Relations, Dr. Rashid Pelpuo, assured that the government would give the proposal thorough consideration. He added that any final agreement would aim to balance the welfare of workers with the country’s fiscal capabilities.
