The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that appointment letters for successful applicants in the Ghana Education Service (GES) recruitment exercise will begin to be issued this week as the government intensifies efforts to address teacher shortages nationwide.
Speaking at the Presidency Communications Office’s Government Accountability Series on Monday, July 20, 2026, the Minister said the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service is expected to start releasing appointment letters from Friday.
Haruna Iddrisu explained that although the government had originally planned to issue the appointments on July 1, 2026, technical and administrative challenges with the recruitment process led to a postponement.
He assured applicants that the recruitment process has now reached its final stages and that appointment letters will begin going out before the end of the week.
Government approves additional teacher recruitment
The Education Minister also announced that President John Dramani Mahama, in collaboration with the Ministry of Finance, has approved another recruitment exercise aimed at employing more trained teachers.
According to him, once the ongoing recruitment of about 7,000 teachers is completed, the government will open a fresh recruitment window in November 2026 to engage an additional 8,000 teachers.
The newly recruited teachers are expected to report to their respective schools between January and February 2027.
He noted that the additional recruitment forms part of the government’s broader agenda to reduce teacher shortages and improve the quality of education across the country.
Focus on underserved districts
Haruna Iddrisu said priority will be given to deprived and underserved communities where teacher shortages continue to affect teaching and learning.
He explained that districts facing critical staffing challenges will receive a larger allocation of newly recruited teachers than urban areas with relatively adequate teacher numbers.
The Minister said the policy is intended to ensure a more balanced distribution of teachers nationwide and improve educational outcomes, particularly in rural communities.
He further advised successful applicants to keep checking the Ghana Education Service’s official communication platforms for updates on appointment letters, posting details, validation requirements, and reporting procedures.
The latest announcement comes as the government continues efforts to strengthen Ghana’s education sector through increased teacher recruitment and improved staffing in schools across the country.
