Bibiani GoldStars’ maiden journey in the CAF Champions League ended in disappointment after they were handed a heavy 5-0 defeat by Algeria’s JS Kabylie in the second-leg clash at Tizi Ouzou on Sunday night.
The Ghana Premier League holders had already fallen 2-0 at home in the first leg at the Accra Sports Stadium, and the latest setback confirmed a 7-0 aggregate elimination at the preliminary stage.
The match started poorly for the Miners when goalkeeper Emmanuel Kobi turned the ball into his own net just seven minutes in. Kabylie doubled their lead midway through the opening half through Ryad Boudebouz, before Mehdi Merghem struck shortly after the interval to tighten the Algerians’ grip on the tie.
GoldStars’ troubles worsened in the 60th minute when defender Emmanuel Ankrah was shown a red card, leaving them a man down. Kabylie quickly capitalized, with Lahlou Akhrib netting the fourth goal before Oualid Maliki sealed the emphatic win in stoppage time.
With the victory, JS Kabylie progress to the next stage of the tournament, while GoldStars are left to regroup and shift focus to defending their Ghana Premier League title
