The Public Relations Officer of the Gbewaa Palace, Musah Yakubu, has appealed to the Ministry of Youth and Sports to consider recruiting players from the University for Development Studies (UDS) men’s football team into Ghana’s national squads after their remarkable triumph at the 2025 FISU World University Football Cup in China.
UDS etched their name in history by beating defending champions Paulista University of Brazil 2–1 in extra time, making them the first African university to win the globally respected competition. The Ghanaian team stood out throughout the tournament with their determination, resilience, and high-level performance.
In an interview on Channel One Newsroom on Sunday, September 28, Mr. Yakubu extended congratulations to the team on behalf of the Gbewaa Palace, noting that the Dagbon kingdom was elated by their success. He emphasized that giving these players opportunities in the Black Stars or other national teams could greatly advance sports development in Ghana.
“We shall welcome them in grand style; the king and the nation are proud of their achievement. This tournament has revealed the wealth of sporting talent among our youth. I trust that the Sports Ministry will take the opportunity to scout these players. Hopefully, some will be drafted into the national teams to strengthen the country’s sporting landscape. We are truly proud and look forward to seeing them shine at the national level, Insha Allah,” he said.
Mr. Yakubu further conveyed the goodwill and support of the King of Dagbon, Ndan Yaa Naa Abukari II, to the UDS fraternity.
He noted that the King remains committed to backing the university financially, morally, and psychologically to help uplift its image and impact in Ghana.
