sexual misconduct

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has referred allegations of sexual misconduct involving the headmaster of Obuasi Senior High Technical School, Zakaria Abdulai, and female students to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) for a criminal investigation.

The decision will allow the police to investigate the alleged criminal offences while the education authorities conduct a separate administrative inquiry into the matter.

Speaking on Monday, October 19, Mr Iddrisu confirmed that the headmaster had been interdicted pending the outcome of the investigations.

He stressed that the government would not tolerate sexual misconduct involving teachers and students, describing such behaviour as an abuse of office.

In an interview with Citi News, the minister said the case had been forwarded to the CID to investigate its criminal aspects. He added that the headmaster’s interdiction was a precautionary measure while the authorities assessed the merits of the allegations.

Mr. Iddrisu also disclosed that the government was considering broader interventions to tackle indiscipline in schools. These measures could include stricter regulations to guide the behaviour and professional conduct of both teachers and students.

According to the minister, a committee would soon be established to advise the government on the proposed measures.

He further expressed support for efforts to give the Ghana Education Service’s code of conduct and professional standards legal backing under Article 11 of the 1992 Constitution.

The proposed reforms are expected to strengthen accountability and provide a firmer regulatory framework for addressing misconduct within Ghana’s education system.
