Ghana is set to deploy approximately 400 nurses to Jamaica as part of a new bilateral agreement aimed at enhancing healthcare services in the Caribbean nation.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, following the successful revival of the Ghana–Jamaica Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation (PJCC), which reconvened after a 21-year hiatus.

In a Facebook post on May 31, 2026, Mr Ablakwa highlighted the agreement as one of the key outcomes of discussions between the two countries.

He explained that the initiative will enable qualified Ghanaian nurses to take up employment opportunities in Jamaica while contributing to the strengthening of the country’s healthcare system.
According to the minister, the arrangement reflects the increasing global demand for Ghanaian professionals and demonstrates the confidence many countries have in the expertise and competence of Ghana’s workforce.
Beyond the healthcare partnership, Ghana and Jamaica signed additional agreements designed to deepen collaboration in the areas of defence and tourism.
The two nations are also exploring opportunities for educational exchanges, with ongoing discussions focused on the possible deployment of Ghanaian teachers to Jamaica. Negotiations on that initiative are expected to be concluded by August 2026.
Mr Ablakwa further acknowledged Jamaica’s support for Ghana on the international stage, particularly during the adoption of a Ghana-sponsored United Nations resolution that recognised transatlantic enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity.
