President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for the recruitment of 16,000 nurses in two phases to strengthen Ghana’s healthcare system, with a particular focus on improving services in underserved communities.

Speaking at the launch of the Free Primary Healthcare Programme at the Ho Municipal Hospital on Thursday, July 16, the President disclosed that the recruitment exercise will begin with 8,000 nurses, followed by a second batch of another 8,000. The move is intended to ensure that newly qualified nurses are employed promptly after completing their training.

President Mahama explained that the recruitment forms part of the government’s broader strategy to address staffing shortages and improve access to quality healthcare across the country.

He noted that while recruitment opportunities are being created, many of the newly employed nurses will be deployed to rural and underserved areas where healthcare services are most needed.

The President also called on nurses and other healthcare professionals to embrace a spirit of dedication and selfless service, encouraging them to follow the example of Florence Nightingale by providing compassionate care wherever they are posted.

Addressing concerns about the welfare of health workers, President Mahama reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing their conditions of service as Ghana’s economic situation continues to improve.

He assured them that efforts would be made to provide better incentives and working conditions to keep them motivated in delivering quality healthcare.

In addition, the President praised the management and staff of the Ho Municipal Hospital for their 100 years of dedicated service to the nation.

He described healthcare professionals as indispensable members of society, acknowledging their vital contribution to safeguarding the health and well-being of Ghanaians.
