teachersMinister for Education - Haruna Iddrisu

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has disclosed that the government is in the process of recruiting about 7,000 teachers nationwide to help address staffing shortages and enhance access to quality education, particularly in underserved communities.

Speaking in Parliament, the minister explained that the placement of the newly recruited teachers would be determined by the staffing requirements of the Ghana Education Service (GES).

He stressed that successful applicants could be assigned to any region where their services are needed most.

According to Mr Iddrisu, the government is committed to ensuring a fair distribution of teachers across the country to strengthen teaching and learning outcomes in public schools.

He noted that teacher postings would not necessarily be based on an applicant’s region of residence or where they received their training. Instead, deployments would be guided by identified vacancies and operational needs within the education sector.

The minister further indicated that the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the GES, may reassign teachers from schools and districts with excess staff to areas facing severe teacher shortages.

Newly recruited teachers can be posted to any region based on service needs. We have to act and act well on this matter,” he stated.

Mr Iddrisu also revealed that a recent GES assessment uncovered situations where some communities had resorted to hiring and paying teachers themselves due to inadequate staffing in local schools.

As an example, he cited a case in which about 176 community teachers were being funded directly by parents and community members to support teaching and learning activities.

The minister said the findings underscore the urgent need for government intervention to ensure qualified teachers are deployed to deprived and underserved communities across the country.
