Hunter shoots woman after mistaking her for an animal

A tragic shooting incident has been reported at Okaniaase in the Katanga District, where a woman lost her life after a hunter allegedly mistook her for an animal.

According to reports, the victim had gone out to harvest mangoes, an activity common during the peak season when the incident occurred. Many residents in the area typically gather mangoes for sale to traders who supply major markets, including those in Accra.

The suspect, believed to be a local hunter, reportedly fired his weapon after thinking he had spotted an animal. He later told investigators that he was unaware a person was nearby at the time. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have since arrested the suspect, who is currently in custody at the Katanga District Police Command, as investigations continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident. Authorities have not yet disclosed the identities of either the victim or the suspect.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns, with authorities urging hunters to be extra cautious, especially during farming and harvesting periods when more people are likely to be present in bush areas.
