Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga has disclosed that the government is considering changing the name of Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport.
The announcement points to a significant shift involving one of Ghana’s most prominent national facilities. Mr. Ayariga made the disclosure while speaking to the media ahead of the opening of the Second Session of the 9th Parliament.
According to him, the move is part of a wider initiative aimed at ensuring that the names of public institutions reflect Ghana’s democratic ideals and national identity.
He stated that the government plans to lay a bill before Parliament to formalize the proposed change, in accordance with due process. Mr. Ayariga emphasized that any such decision must be legally justified and aligned with the wishes of the Ghanaian people.
The proposed renaming is likely to spark public discussion because of the historical importance attached to the airport’s current name, with Parliament expected to play a central role in debating the matter once it is officially presented before the House.
