Manchester City have tightened the Premier League title race after a 2-1 victory over Arsenal on Sunday, with Erling Haaland scoring the decisive goal.
Managed by Pep Guardiola, City are now just three points behind the league leaders and still have a game in hand, putting them in a strong position as Arsenal’s push for their first league title in 22 years begins to falter.
The Gunners’ struggles have deepened since their EFL Cup Final defeat to City last month, managing just one win in their last six matches across all competitions, including four straight domestic losses. A win against Burnley on Wednesday could send City to the top of the table for the first time this year.
After finishing as runners-up for three consecutive seasons, Arsenal now risk letting another major opportunity slip. Despite their defeat, they were unlucky, striking the post twice around Haaland’s second-half winner.
City initially took the lead through a brilliant solo effort from Rayan Cherki. Arsenal found a way back when Kai Havertz capitalised on a mistake by Gianluigi Donnarumma, blocking his clearance into the net for an equaliser.
However, City’s attacking edge proved decisive. Haaland struck his 34th goal of the season with 25 minutes remaining, while Havertz missed a late opportunity to equalise, heading over in stoppage time.
City began the match aggressively, with Cherki hitting the post and appeals for a handball against Gabriel Magalhães waved away. Arsenal had started to settle before Cherki produced a moment of brilliance, weaving past defenders including Declan Rice to score.
Arsenal were quickly gifted a lifeline when Donnarumma hesitated on the ball, allowing Havertz to press and deflect his clearance into the goal. The equaliser disrupted City’s rhythm, and it took Guardiola’s half-time intervention to restore control.
Haaland nearly scored again when he struck the post following a corner, but Arsenal soon had chances of their own. Donnarumma made amends with a crucial one-on-one save against Havertz, while Martin Ødegaard saw his rebound cleared off the line by Matheus Nunes.
Soon after, Eberechi Eze hit the inside of the post, with the ball rolling agonisingly along the goal line instead of going in.
City capitalised on their good fortune as Haaland overpowered Gabriel to meet a cross from Nico O’Reilly and score the winner. Arsenal again hit the woodwork when Gabriel’s header deflected onto the post, and Havertz failed to convert the rebound.
Gabriel was fortunate to avoid a red card after an apparent headbutt on Haaland resulted only in a booking. Arsenal had a final chance to equalise, but Havertz could not keep his header from Leandro Trossard’s cross on target.
A frustrated Mikel Arteta reacted in disbelief on the sidelines, now facing the challenge of lifting his team for the final five matches. While Arsenal’s remaining fixtures appear more favourable on paper, their form suggests they may have run out of momentum at a crucial stage.
