The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has once again rejected claims that President John Dramani Mahama is pursuing a third-term agenda, reaffirming the party’s respect for Ghana’s Constitution and democratic values.
Addressing the issue on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, December 16, the NDC’s General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, said the party would not back any effort to amend the Constitution to prolong presidential tenure, no matter how dominant it may be in Parliament.
Kwetey described Ghana as a beacon of democratic transition in sub-Saharan Africa, highlighting the country’s consistent adherence to constitutional term limits as a source of inspiration for other nations in the region.
He stressed that the NDC would never support actions that weaken the Constitution, adding that President Mahama has already made his position clear by putting an end to conversations about a possible third term.
According to him, even with the party’s large parliamentary majority, the NDC has no intention of exploiting its numbers to pursue constitutional changes for individual or political interests.
Kwetey maintained that the party’s focus remains on acting in the best interest of the country, especially in what he described as a period of national reset, and not on altering the Constitution to please any individual.
He concluded by reaffirming the party’s firm position, stating unequivocally that the NDC fully supports the president and that there will be no third term.
