Police Inspector Bright Appiah Danquah has been arrested in Kumasi over alleged armed robbery attacks targeting mobile money (MoMo) vendors after reportedly leaving his mobile phone behind during one of the operations.

The police officer, who is stationed at Abuakwa in the Ashanti Region, is accused of carrying out a series of robbery attacks against more than eight MoMo vendors across Kumasi.

One of the victims, Victoria Arkoh, alleged that the suspect robbed her at gunpoint and made away with GH₵38,600, mobile phones, ATM cards, her Ghana Card, and other personal belongings.

According to reports, investigations into the robbery cases gained momentum after the suspect allegedly forgot his phone at one of the crime scenes, which eventually led to his arrest.

Speaking to Crime Check Foundation, Mrs Arkoh recounted how she was attacked at her mobile money shop at Santasi-Adiembra on May 4, 2026.

She explained that the suspect arrived on a motorbike pretending to conduct a normal transaction before later pulling a gun on her.

He came on a motorbike and stood behind my shop where the entrance is. I asked him to stand in front of the counter so the CCTV could capture him,” she recounted.

According to the victim, the suspect initially asked for her phone number so someone could transfer money to him. However, she declined and advised him to request a direct cash-out authorisation instead.

Mrs Arkoh said moments later, the suspect moved to the back entrance of the shop, pointed a gun at her, and demanded all the money in her possession.

As I went inside to sit at the counter, he went to the back door, pointed a gun at me, and demanded all my money. I urinated on myself, and it drained onto my one-year-old baby,” she said.

She claimed the suspect fled with GH₵38,600 in cash together with her ATM card, Ghana Card, wedding ring, and mobile phones.

The victim added that despite shouting for help, nearby residents were too scared to chase the suspect because he was armed and riding a motorbike.

Mrs Arkoh stated that she later reported the incident to the Sokoban Police Station, where she allegedly discovered that another MoMo vendor had been attacked by the same officer a day earlier.

According to her, the major breakthrough in the case came after the suspect reportedly abandoned his phone during one of the robbery operations.

“When he went to rob one of the MoMo vendors, the victim told him to enter the shop to collect the money. While they were going inside, the victim ran off,” she said.

“The officer left his gun and phone on the counter. After taking the money, he grabbed his gun but forgot his phone. The phone led to his arrest,” she added.

Police investigations reportedly traced the phone to Inspector Bright Appiah Danquah after officers discovered information confirming he was a member of the Ghana Police Service.

Mrs Arkoh further alleged that before his arrest, the suspect had earlier visited the Adiebeba Police Station to report that his phone had been stolen and requested assistance to track it.

She also disclosed that at least eight additional victims have since filed complaints against the police officer.

The case has reportedly been transferred to the Central Police Station, where an identification parade was organised.

According to the victim, four other suspects made up of two police officers and two civilians have also been arrested in connection with the alleged robberies and remanded into custody while investigations continue
