The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), Abraham Amaliba, has warned that drivers and operators of Toyota Voxy vehicles who ignore new directives will be arrested and prosecuted.
Speaking on Dwaso Nsem on Adom FM, Amaliba said the authority is shifting from policy discussions to firm enforcement, following recommendations from a technical committee that assessed the safety of the vehicles.
He disclosed that the NRSA will collaborate with the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to prevent such vehicles from operating at transport stations. Enforcement teams will also be deployed across roads nationwide to ensure compliance.
Amaliba stressed that violators will face immediate legal action, making it clear that the Authority is fully committed to enforcing the directive.
The warning comes after plans to limit the use of Toyota Voxy vehicles for long-distance commercial transport due to safety concerns.
A committee report found that many of these vehicles have been heavily modified, particularly their suspension systems and tyres, often by unapproved operators, compromising their structural integrity and increasing the likelihood of mechanical faults.
He added that the NRSA will engage transport operators and other stakeholders within the next two weeks before fully implementing the new measures.
According to the authority, its partnership with the police will ensure the directive is not only announced but strictly enforced, with clear penalties for those who fail to comply.
