Church attack in Nigeria

A horrifying video that has gone viral on social media captures the moment terrorists stormed a church during a worship service in Eruku Town, located in Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, Nigeria.

The shocking incident, which unfolded on Sunday, has sparked widespread outrage, fear, and renewed calls for strengthened security across religious centres in the country.

The video shows worshippers singing and praying shortly before heavily armed attackers force their way into the church. Within seconds, chaos erupts as gunshots ring out and congregants scramble in panic, seeking safety under benches, behind pillars, or through any available exit.

According to early reports from local authorities, the terrorists invaded the church mid-service and opened fire indiscriminately. Eyewitnesses described the attack as sudden and brutal, leaving many too terrified to fully recount what happened.

One survivor said, “We were in the middle of worship when we heard loud bangs. Before we knew it, armed men entered and started shooting. Everyone was running, crying, shouting. It was like a nightmare.”

Multiple Injuries Feared as Attackers Flee

While the exact number of casualties has not yet been confirmed, several worshippers reportedly sustained gunshot wounds, with some in critical condition. Emergency responders and local volunteers rushed the injured to nearby hospitals for urgent care.

The attackers, believed to be part of a terrorist group operating within the region, fled shortly after carrying out the assault. Security agencies have since cordoned off the area and launched a full-scale manhunt to track down the suspects.

Authorities Condemn ‘Barbaric Act’

The Kwara State Government has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a “dastardly and inhumane act targeted at innocent worshippers.” Officials assured residents that security in and around Eruku and neighbouring communities will be heightened to prevent further incidents.

Local police also confirmed the launch of an investigation and promised to update the public as more information becomes available. “We are working with other security units to identify, pursue, and apprehend the criminals involved,” a police spokesperson said.

Religious Leaders Call for Calm and Vigilance

Pastors, imams, and religious associations across Nigeria have expressed deep sorrow and concern over the growing trend of attacks on places of worship. Many called for increased government intervention, improved intelligence gathering, and stronger community vigilance.

A statement from a regional Christian association urged churches to enhance security protocols. “We must pray, but we must also take precautions. This attack on Eruku Town is another painful reminder that we cannot take safety for granted,” the group noted.

Social Media Reactions and National Outcry

The viral video of the attack has triggered emotional reactions nationwide. Many Nigerians expressed sympathy for the victims and frustration over persistent insecurity in parts of the country. Others called for federal authorities to intensify counterterrorism operations, particularly in rural and border communities where terrorist groups often operate with ease.

Human rights organisations have also demanded thorough investigations and long-term strategies to curb violent extremism. They warn that without sustained security reforms and community cooperation, such attacks may continue to escalate.

Investigation Ongoing

As Eruku Town grapples with the aftermath of the attack, security agencies are urging residents to remain alert and report suspicious activities. Officials say more updates will be provided once casualty figures are confirmed and as the hunt for the attackers progresses.

The tragic incident adds to a worrying pattern of assaults on religious centres across Nigeria, reigniting urgent national conversations on insecurity, religious freedom, and the protection of civilians
