Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is scheduled to appear before the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service on Monday, October 6.
This comes after Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Dominic Ayine, issued a strong warning on Friday, October 3, that Wontumi would face arrest if he failed to show up, emphasizing that charges against him had already been approved.
The case involves Akonta Mining Limited, a company associated with Chairman Wontumi, which is currently being investigated for alleged illegal mining activities. Dr. Ayine revealed that the progress of the case had been delayed due to missing key documents during the previous administration.
In an interview with Citi News on Sunday, October 5, Wontumi’s lawyer, Andy Appiah-Kubi, confirmed his client’s readiness to comply with the directive.
“We have been instructed to appear before the police CID in Accra, and we are prepared to do so. We will be at the CID headquarters at 10 a.m.,” he stated.
Appiah-Kubi, however, criticized the Attorney General’s public caution, describing it as unwarranted.
“The Attorney General’s statement came as a surprise to us. We have always respected and cooperated with the authorities, so the warning was unnecessary. We will honour the invitation as expected,” he added.
