The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has strongly criticized remarks made by the President of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Reverend Isaac Owusu, who urged male teachers to refrain from having sexual relationships with students and instead seek relationships with their female colleagues.
Speaking during the commissioning of the Dr. Leonard Kaledzi Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence Education in Anloga on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, Mr. Iddrisu described the comments as “inappropriate” and a form of sexual harassment.
He emphasized that such statements are unprofessional and contradict ongoing efforts to maintain ethical standards and ensure the safety of students in schools.
Haruna Iddrisu slams GNAT president
“We will take disciplinary action against any teacher found in a compromising situation with a female student because such conduct threatens safety and the learning environment. Therefore, the GNAT President’s suggestion that male teachers can have relations with female teachers is unacceptable — even that could amount to sexual harassment, as it breaches the teachers’ code of conduct,” he cautioned.
Mr. Iddrisu reaffirmed his ministry’s commitment to promoting discipline and professionalism in the education sector, warning that any teacher involved in misconduct would face severe consequences.
