Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi, widely known as Abu Trica, has reportedly been extradited to the United States on Thursday morning to face legal proceedings.

According to reports, he departed Ghana on Delta Airlines flight DL 157, following the completion of the extradition process.

The development comes just hours after his lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, revealed that his client had been taken to the police hospital in Accra. The lawyer expressed concern that Abu Trica was allegedly denied access to legal counsel and said he was unable to meet or communicate with him before he was flown out of the country.

Abu Trica has been at the center of a lengthy extradition case after U.S. authorities formally requested that Ghana hand him over.

He is wanted in the United States over allegations of financial crimes, including money laundering and fraud, with investigators accusing him of participating in schemes that allegedly defrauded investors of substantial amounts of money.

The case has generated significant public interest in Ghana, sparking debate over the country’s extradition procedures, the legal rights of accused persons, and Ghana’s obligations under international agreements.

In an attempt to block the extradition, Abu Trica filed an application at the Accra High Court, challenging the legality of the process. However, the court dismissed the application, clearing the way for his transfer to the United States.

Before the extradition, his legal team repeatedly questioned how the process was being handled, raising concerns over access to legal representation as well as his client’s health.
