The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has announced that the Ministry of Health is implementing a phased recruitment programme for nurses, midwives, and other health professionals to strengthen healthcare delivery across Ghana.

Addressing Parliament, the Minister explained that the recruitment exercise is being carried out in stages to match the government’s available financial resources while addressing staffing shortages, especially in underserved communities.

According to him, the current phase of the recruitment exercise is focused on qualified nurses and midwives from the 2021 cohort, with successful applicants already reporting to their assigned health facilities nationwide.

Mr. Akandoh further disclosed that the 2022 batch of qualified nurses and midwives is expected to be recruited before the end of 2026. He added that recruitment for the 2023 cohort will follow, subject to the Ministry of Finance granting the necessary financial clearance.

The Minister also revealed that the government plans to recruit 16,000 health professionals this year, with priority being given to healthcare facilities in underserved areas to improve access to quality medical services across the country.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to gradually employing qualified health workers, stating that the phased approach is intended to ensure that health institutions receive the personnel they need while maintaining fiscal discipline.

The announcement offers renewed optimism to thousands of qualified nurses and midwives, particularly those from the 2022 and 2023 graduating batches, who have been awaiting recruitment into the public health sector.

The Ministry of Health is expected to provide additional information as the phased recruitment exercise continues.
