President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched Ghana’s first electronic visa (e-Visa) portal, introducing a major digital reform in the country’s immigration and travel system.
The newly introduced platform enables travellers to apply for visas online, make payments electronically, and receive approval without the need to visit a Ghanaian embassy or consulate in person.
Speaking at the launch event on Monday, May 25, 2026, President Mahama announced that African passport holders travelling to Ghana for business purposes would now process their visas solely through the online platform and would be exempt from paying visa fees.
According to the President, the previous visa-on-arrival arrangement has been abolished and replaced with the new digital visa system.
He explained that the initiative is part of Ghana’s broader vision to promote African integration and strengthen ties between the country, Africans on the continent, and the diaspora.
President Mahama further disclosed that the government is working toward a future where all people of African descent can travel to Ghana without paying visa fees as part of efforts to reconnect them with their heritage.
He said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior have been directed to develop the necessary framework to make that vision possible.
Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mubarak, described the e-Visa portal as a major step toward eliminating bureaucratic challenges and making Ghana more attractive to investors, tourists, and international partners.
According to him, the digital platform will eliminate unnecessary delays and outdated procedures while improving speed, convenience, and efficiency for travellers.
He added that the initiative sends a strong message that Ghana is ready to welcome business opportunities, tourism, and global partnerships.
Mr. Mubarak also stressed that the new visa system would strengthen national security through smarter digital monitoring and screening processes.
Meanwhile, Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa assured applicants that the system would significantly speed up visa processing.
He stated that applicants who complete the online application process and submit all required documents should expect to receive a decision within 48 hours due to the efficiency of the new platform.
