Teachers at Kobedi AME Zion Primary and Junior High School in the Sunyani West Municipality of the Bono Region have reportedly suspended teaching activities indefinitely after the deaths of two staff members under circumstances that have created fear and tension within the community.
The industrial action, which reportedly started on May 18, 2026, has left classrooms empty and pupils without lessons.
Among the deceased is the school’s head teacher, Madam Gladys Dorlo Batinge. Her death, along with that of another teacher, has intensified anxiety among both staff and residents.
According to a report by Crime Check News, a visit to the Kobedi community near Chiraa showed the school deserted during class hours, with neither teachers nor students present on the premises.
The incident has also triggered rumours in the area, with some residents claiming the deaths could be connected to a curse allegedly invoked by a student after accusations of extortion were levelled against school authorities.
Some community members, speaking anonymously, alleged that fear surrounding a local deity linked to the supposed curse has contributed to teachers refusing to return to the classrooms.
One resident told Crime Check News that teachers had collectively decided to boycott classes in protest over the ongoing situation at the school.
A teacher at the school also reportedly confirmed that staff members would not resume teaching until the alleged curse issue is resolved.
The development has disrupted academic work in the community, with reports indicating that many pupils have been left roaming around during school hours.
Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the deaths or the allegations surrounding the reported curse.
