Two candidates sitting for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) have lost their lives after a road accident in the Upper West Region.
The victims, Taufii Ibrahim and Abdul Khalid, were students of Charia Roman Catholic Junior High School. Reports indicate they were travelling on a motorcycle (okada) from Charia to their examination centre in Wa when the crash occurred.
According to JoyNews correspondent Rafiq Salam, the incident happened on Sunday as the two were heading to join their colleagues for this year’s BECE.
He explained that the students were relocating to Wa for the duration of the exams because their community does not have a designated examination centre. Motorcycles, he noted, are the main form of transport in the area.
Both victims were rushed to a nearby health facility. Taufii was declared dead on arrival, while Khalid passed away later on Monday afternoon.
The tragic incident comes as more than 620,000 candidates across the country take part in the week-long examination, which began nationwide on Monday, May 4.
