The Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters deployed under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) has been struck by missiles as hostilities escalate between the Israel Defence Forces and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
According to a statement issued by the Ghana Armed Forces on Friday, March 6, the attack occurred between 17:45 and 17:52 local time. Two Ghanaian soldiers were critically injured, while another officer experienced psychological distress.
The strike also caused significant damage to the base, destroying the Officers’ Mess, which was completely engulfed by fire.
Military officials stated that the injured soldiers are currently receiving medical attention at the Level One Medical Bunker and are in stable condition. Plans are underway to transfer them to the UNIFIL Headquarters Referral Hospital for additional treatment.
The armed forces also assured the public that the rest of the Ghanaian troops stationed at the base are safe after taking refuge in underground bunkers during the attack.
In response to the incident, the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, has filed an official protest at the United Nations headquarters in New York, calling on all parties operating within the UNIFIL mission area to respect their responsibility to safeguard peacekeeping personnel.
