NSMQ

The 2025 edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) has been officially launched, ushering in another exciting season to celebrate Ghana’s top young scientists and mathematicians.

The launch, held on Wednesday, October 15, at the Elijah Namyela Pankah Auditorium in Accra, brought together key stakeholders in education, corporate sponsors, and students. A record 174 schools will battle for the prestigious national trophy and academic supremacy — the highest number of participants in the competition’s history.

Out of the total, 27 schools have already qualified for the one-eighth stage of the national championship. During the event, a transparent draw grouped the remaining contestants into pots labeled A, B, and C to determine matchups.

In her welcome address, Nana Akua Mensah Bonsu, Managing Director of Primetime Limited — organisers of the NSMQ — praised the competition for highlighting “the talent, discipline, and resilience of young Ghanaians.” She emphasized that the NSMQ continues to stand as a symbol of academic brilliance and innovation.

She noted that this year’s virtual balloting, conducted on June 25, was aimed at enhancing inclusivity and fairness. “This year, we have 174 schools competing, up from 157 last year. This increase demonstrates the growing influence and importance of the NSMQ,” she said.

Mensah Bonsu commended the 15 new entrants and the 27 seeded schools for their hard work and competitive spirit, while expressing gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, and sponsors including GOIL PLC, MTN MoMo, JoyNews, Pepsodent, Prudential Life Insurance, Jupay, and Truster AI.

Delivering the keynote address, Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, described the NSMQ as a vital platform for nurturing scientific potential and advancing STEM education in Ghana. “This platform is yours to showcase brilliance,” he told the contestants. “Rise and shine with science and mathematics, for the future of Ghana lies in a generation committed to STEM — the foundation of economic progress.”

The Minister also hinted at possible reforms to include research and experimentation in the competition to enhance practical learning. He lauded the expansion of participating schools under President Mahama’s Reset Agenda, calling it a move toward fairness and broader access to science education.

Corporate Affairs Executive of GOIL PLC, Irene Boakye Dankwah, reaffirmed the company’s unwavering support for the NSMQ, calling it a “transformative initiative that inspires academic distinction and empowers the nation’s future innovators.”

“At GOIL, our tagline is ‘Good Energy,’ and we believe investing in young scientific minds is the perfect expression of that,” she remarked. “Your enthusiasm for science and mathematics embodies the true good energy of Ghana’s progress.”

The 2025 NSMQ National Championship will once again take place in Cape Coast. The preliminary contests begin on October 20, with the grand finale scheduled for November 6, 2025
