Nearly 600,000 first-year students are expected to report to Senior High Schools (SHSs) nationwide today, October 18, marking the official start of the 2025/2026 academic year.

The atmosphere across the country is filled with a blend of excitement and nervous anticipation as thousands of families travel long distances to accompany their wards to their respective schools.

At major lorry stations, new students were spotted dressed in fresh uniforms, carrying trunks and chop boxes packed with essential school supplies. On campuses, scenes of joy and eagerness filled the air as students began settling in for their next educational chapter.

Parents and guardians were actively helping with registration and accommodation processes, while school officials worked diligently to manage the large crowds and ensure admissions proceeded smoothly.

However, a few schools have rescheduled their admissions for later dates. The Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School (PRESEC) at Legon in Accra, for instance, has postponed the arrival of first-year students to allow for a thorough fumigation exercise after continuing students vacated on Thursday, October 17, 2025.

This, according to authorities, is to provide a safe and hygienic environment for the newcomers. Similarly, Mawuli School in the Volta Region has delayed its intake as it completes activities marking its 75th anniversary celebration.

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has reassured parents and guardians that every student who has been placed in a school will be admitted.

The Service emphasized its commitment to ensuring that all qualified candidates gain access to secondary education under the government’s policy of inclusive and equitable learning opportunities.
