The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has announced that the 7,000 newly recruited teachers under the Ghana Education Service (GES) will officially commence work on July 1, 2026.

He explained that the deployment forms part of the government’s broader strategy to strengthen staffing capacity in basic and secondary schools across the country and improve the quality of education delivery.

Addressing Parliament on Thursday, June 18, Mr Iddrisu stated that the recruitment exercise was undertaken to help address persistent teacher shortages in educational institutions nationwide.

The minister noted that although the sector requires a significantly larger workforce to meet growing demands, budgetary constraints limited government approval to the recruitment of 7,000 teachers during the current exercise.

He further indicated that the deployment process has been finalised and that appointment letters will be issued in the coming days to ensure successful applicants are posted to their respective schools ahead of the new academic term.

Mr Iddrisu emphasised that the recruitment initiative forms part of ongoing reforms aimed at enhancing teaching and learning outcomes across the education sector.

He, however, acknowledged that staffing deficits continue to pose a major challenge and underscored the need for sustained investment, strategic planning, and policy interventions to bridge existing gaps and strengthen the country’s educational system.
